Issues in Document Management FAQs

Question 1: What has changed with issues?

Answer 1: Previously, issues were separated into Document issues and Field issues, with each having different capabilities and permissions. These two types of issue have now been combined to provide BIM 360 users with a more unified experience.

This change brings more issue types, sub-types, and attributes, includes support for custom issue types and attributes, and introduces a wider range of statuses. It also changes the way permissions for creating issues work. For more information, see Issues.

Question 2: Why can’t I view an issue in Document Management on a document I have full control over?

Answer 2: Permissions for viewing and creating issues associated with documents are controlled by your project administrator, and are no longer based on whether you have access to view the document. Instead, for a given issue, only the issue creator, owners (past or present), assignees (past or present), users from the same company as the creator or owners (past or present) will be able to view that issue. This means that even if you have full access to a document, you may not be able to view an associated issue.

Project administrators, and users with View All, View and Create, and Full Control permissions, are able to view all issues, even if they don't have full access to the documents. In this case they may be able to view an issue, but not the associated document.

If you have any problems, you may need to contact your project administrator to discuss issue permissions for your documents.

Question 3: Why can’t I create an issue?

Answer 3: Permissions for creating and viewing issues are controlled by your project administrator, compared to previously where anyone could create an issue.

If you have any problems, you may need to contact your project administrator to discuss your ability to create issues.

Question 4: Why do I see so many issues on the Issues tab?

Answer 4: All issues, including issues you would have typically created in Document Management, as well as those that would have typically been created in Field Management, are now shown as a single, unified list. The list can be found on both the Issues tab and in the Issues panel in the viewer.

Question 5: How can I control issue types and sub-types, and custom attributes?

Answer 5: Custom issue types and sub-types, and custom attributes, can be added by your project administrator to create issues tailored to your project.

Question 6: How do I work with issue statuses?

Answer 6: There are two status sets that control the workflow of issues:

The issue type selected when creating an issue determines the status set available to you when working with issues. The defaults are as follows:

Only issue creators or project administrators can see issues in Draft mode. Creators, assignees, and project administrators can change an issues status, for example to Answered or Work completed, but only creators and project administrators can set an issue to Closed.
