To Work With Lists in Multiline Text

Follow these basic steps to work with lists in multiline text.

  1. Create or edit a multiline text object.
    • Insert. Click Home tabAnnotation panelMultiline Text. Find
    • Edit. Double-click the multiline text object.
  2. Right-click in the editor. Click Bullets and Lists and verify that Allow Bullets and Lists, and Allow Auto Bullets and Numbering are checked.
  3. Follow the steps as described in the following sections to work with lists.
  4. To save your changes and exit the editor, use one of the following methods:
    • On the Text Editor ribbon contextual tab, on the Close panel, click Close Text Editor.
    • Click OK on the Text Formatting toolbar.
    • Click in the drawing outside the editor.
    Note: Press Esc to exit the editor without saving your changes.

Create a Lettered or Numbered List as you Type

  1. Enter a letter or a number and punctuation. The following characters can be used as punctuation after letters and numbers:
    • Period .
    • Colon :
    • Close parenthesis )
    • Close angle bracket >
    • Close square bracket ]
    • Close curly bracket }
  2. Press TAB.
  3. Enter the text for the list item. Press ENTER to proceed to the next item, or press SHIFT+ENTER to add a plain paragraph before the next item.

    The item is automatically lettered or numbered in sequence.

  4. Press ENTER twice to end the list.

Create a Bulleted List as you Type

  1. Use one of the following methods to select the bullet character:
    • Enter U+2022, the Unicode string for a bullet.
    • On the Text Editor ribbon contextual tab, in the Paragraph panel, click Bullets and Numbering Bulleted.
    • Copy and paste a character from the Character Map.
  2. Press TAB.
  3. Enter the text for the list item. Press ENTER to proceed to the next item, or press SHIFT+ENTER to add a plain paragraph before the next item.

    The bullet character is automatically added to the next item.

  4. Press ENTER twice to end the list.

Convert Existing Paragraphs to a List

  1. Select the paragraphs to convert.
  2. On the Text Editor ribbon contextual tab, Paragraph panel, click Bullets and Numbering, and select from the following:
    • Numbered. Uses numbers with periods for the items in a list.
    • Lettered Uppercase or Lowercase. Uses letters with periods for the items in a list. If the list has more items than the alphabet has letters, the sequence continues by using double letters.
    • Bulleted. Uses a bullet or other character for the items in a list.
  3. To add new list items, enter the text.
  4. Press ENTER twice to end the list.

Move a List Item Down a Level

  1. Place the cursor at the beginning of a list item and press TAB.

    The item moves down one level and begins a nested list.

  2. Press ENTER to start the next item at the same level, or press SHIFT+TAB to move the item up a level.

Restart Numbering a Part of an Existing List

  1. Select a sequence of list items or place the cursor at the beginning of the item where you want to start the new list.
  2. Right-click in the editor. Click Bullets and Lists Start.

    The selected items are renumbered as a separate sequence. If you select items in the middle of a list, unselected items below the selected items also become part of the new list.
